Celebrating Together: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Published on Jan. 15, 2024

Holidays are a time for celebration, togetherness and acknowledging the values you may hold in your life. At Valley Children’s, we recognize the importance holidays hold within communities and invite you to celebrate them with us through our Celebrating Together blog series. This series highlights holidays throughout the year and showcases the history and various ways you could celebrate them with your own community. In this installment of our Celebrating Together series, we would like to invite you to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy through the recognized National Day of Service.

What is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated every year on the third Monday of January recognizing the work Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did for civil rights in the United States. This day is meant to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through remembering his important efforts in civil rights by serving your own community.

This day is designated as a National Day of Service and many people choose to volunteer and provide service throughout their communities in the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy. These activities could range from volunteering at your local food bank to beautifying your neighborhood and picking up litter you see. There is no limit to how you serve your community on this day, and we encourage you to look within your region to see what opportunities there are locally in your area.
