Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in pediatric surgery and general surgery, Dr. Omar Nunez Lopez joined Valley Children’s as a pediatric surgeon in 2022.

After earning his medical degree and graduating magna cum laude from the University of Carabobo in Venezuela, Dr. Nunez completed a research fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He went on to complete his residency in general surgery as well as a surgical research fellowship and a Master of Medical Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. Dr. Nunez went on to Kansas City, MO where he completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Children's Mercy Hospital/University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine.

Dr. Nunez is an active member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons and the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group. Prior to Valley Children’s, Dr. Nunez served on a plethora of committees ranging from academic to clinical. His research has been recognized in textbooks and he has more than 25 publications in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Journal of Pediatrics and Journal of Adolescent Health, among others.

Dr. Nunez's clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, including the use of robotic surgery in pediatric patients, surgical oncology and colorectal surgery. Dr. Nunez is fluent in English and Spanish.
