Board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Betty Shum joined to Valley Children’s as a pediatric endocrinologist in 2021.
Dr. Shum is a member of a variety of professional societies, including the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Pediatric Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association. She has a passion for continuous learning, which is made evident through her teaching and research background. Dr. Shum served as a resident lecturer while at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, as well as was a committee member for the GMEC diversity and inclusion subcommittee. Her research has focused specifically on type 2 diabetes, obesity and use of non-nutritive sweeteners, as well as type 1 diabetes and quality improvement projects. This research has led to Dr. Shum to share her work through abstracts and presentations. She has also been published in books and peer reviewed journals, including Nelson Pediatrics Board Review: Certification and Recertification and Langmuir.
After earning her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Shum completed a pediatric residency at University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital of Oakland. She then went on to complete a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
