Board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Finnian Steele joined Valley Children’s in July 2021 as a pediatrician at Dakota Pediatrics in Fresno.

Prior to Valley Children’s, Dr. Steele served as a lieutenant commander in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged, they spent a year on a travel adventure across the continental United States. During this time, Dr. Steele began teaching as an adjunct faculty member at the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky, where they earned their medical degree in 2010.

After medical school, Dr. Steele completed an internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and served as battalion medical officer on two deployments overseas. Dr. Steele later completed a residency in pediatrics at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, where they then served as an attending physician. 

Dr. Steele’s life of dedication and service goes far beyond their military service; they served on a medical mission in Malawi and completed a two-year volunteer assignment with the Peace Corps in Niger, West Africa. 

Passionate about educating other healthcare providers on equity and inclusion in healthcare, Dr. Steele has given lectures to nursing students and medical residents on LGBTQ health, healthcare disparities and implicit bias. 

A fan of the outdoors, Dr. Steele enjoys backpacking, travel and outdoor activities including hiking, kayaking and camping. They also enjoy music, with a special interest in Irish folk music.
