Board certified in critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Samuel Lehman joined Valley Children’s in 2003. He became medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit in May 2014. He has served as the Hospital’s patient safety officer since 2007 and also chairs the Patient Safety Committee at Valley Children’s.

An expert in critical care medicine, Dr. Lehman has participated in and conducted several research studies. He has presented at critical care conferences on topics including traumatic brain injury and has published in "Genetics." Dr. Lehman is also a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He received the American Academy of Pediatrics Award for Advocacy for Children in December 1996. Dr. Lehman was also a volunteer physician at the Homeless Shelter Free Clinic at St. Vincent de Paul Village in San Diego, Calif.

Prior to joining Valley Children's, Dr. Lehman was assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Critical Care at the University of Texas, Southwestern School of Medicine. He has also served as attending physician and a transport physician in the Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital and Health Center San Diego.

A graduate from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Dr. Lehman completed his internship and residency in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, where he served as chief resident. He did a fellowship in pediatric critical care at Children’s Hospital and Health Center San Diego.
