Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Nael Mhaissen joined Valley Children’s as a pediatric infectious diseases specialist in August 2015. He has a special interest in infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dr. Mhaissen is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Mhaissen received his medical degree from the University of Damascus in Damascus, Syria. He did his pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, in Memphis, Tennessee.
During his fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Dr. Mhaissen participated in several research projects focusing on gastrointestinal infections in pediatric oncology patients and immunocompromised children.
Dr. Mhaissen took part in an international health rotation, with a focus on HIV prevention, at Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, the Bahamas. He also contributed to a study on the prevalence of, and risk factors for, giardiasis in primary school children in Damascus, Syria.
Dr. Mhaissen is fluent in Arabic.
In his free time, he enjoys biking, kayaking and spending time with his family.
