Dr. John Kinnison, President, Valley Children's Specialty Medical Group

Dr. John Kinnison is president of Valley Children’s Specialty Medical Group Central California, Inc. (SMG), a hospital-based medical corporation associated with Valley Children’s Healthcare. In this role, he provides leadership and oversight to the largest pediatric multi-specialty provider group in the Valley, dedicated to delivering quality specialty medical care to the children of Central California. Striving to meet the medical needs of our communities, his passion and dedication to serve the mission of the organization attracts pediatric providers to Valley Children’s to support these needs.

Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. John Kinnison joined Valley Children’s in June 2004 as a pediatric hospitalist. Prior to his current role, he served as medical director of the clinical partnerships, regional hospitalists and telemedicine programs for Valley Children’s Healthcare. In this role, he collaborated with healthcare organizations across the Valley to collaboratively improve the access and quality of care delivered to pediatric patients in their communities. Additionally, Valley Children’s positions Dr. Kinnison has held include: medical director, emergency preparedness; chair, board of directors, SMG; chair, department of medicine; and medical director, Guilds Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Center.  

Dr. Kinnison is passionate about educating children and families about health and safety issues, and inspiring local youth to pursue exciting careers in healthcare. He also served as the site lead for Pediatric Research in the Inpatient Study (PRIS) – a national pediatric research network focused on improving inpatient health care delivery and best practice medicine.

Dr. Kinnison received his medical degree at Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine, in Maywood, Illinois. He completed a pediatric residency at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno. The residency training he received at Valley Children’s Hospital inspired him to become a pediatric hospitalist.

In his free time, Dr. Kinnison enjoys spending time with his wife, their four sons and their grumble of pugs. He has an affinity for retro gaming systems and an ever-growing toy collection.
