Volunteer Requirements

Valley Children’s depends upon reliable and dedicated volunteers to ensure the best possible care for our patients and their families. We ask that volunteers commit to the requirements and expectations listed below to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients and families.

General Requirements for Volunteers

  • A six-month commitment to volunteering at least eight hours a month on a weekly basis.
  • Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and have completed the 8th grade. Applicants under 18 years of age will need to provide a copy of their transcript demonstrating a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, as well as two letters of recommendation from a guidance counselor and/or teacher.
  • Ability to communicate well in English.

Health Screening Requirements

  • All applicants will undergo a health screening to ensure they meet all the hospital requirements to volunteer. The screening will be scheduled during the application process, and all services will be provided at no cost.
  • The hospital requires a tuberculosis (TB) test during the health screening, or documentation of a negative TB test within the past 12 months.
  • Applicants must provide documentation of immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (Tdap), and influenza (seasonal). If you are not able to provide this proof, you will be required to have a blood test completed on site to check for immunity.
  • All Volunteers are required to get an annual flu vaccination.
  • Applicants must present a valid form of United States government-issued photo identification at their health screening appointment. Parents of minor volunteers will be required to present identification for themselves, as well.
  • The health screening will include a drug test for both adult and minor volunteers. Applicants who test positive will not be able to volunteer at Valley Children's.
  • Minor applicants must submit a birth certificate, court order, adoption decree or notarized power of attorney along with their health screening documents in order to ascertain legal parental permission for program participation and health screening processes. A parent or legal guardian is required to attend all health screening appointments.

Prior to Volunteering

  • Complete all health screening requirements
  • Receive health screening and background clearances
  • Complete a new volunteer orientation training
  • Complete department-specific training
  • Purchase a volunteer apron for $20

Completion of health screening and meeting with the Volunteer Coordinator does not guarantee acceptance into the Volunteer Services program.
