Off-road vehicle safety

Be S.A.F.E.R. Off-road

Off-highway vehicles like ATVs and side-by-sides can be fun — but they’re powerful machines that can be dangerous if not used safely. Watch our safety video to learn how to protect your kids and ride responsibly.

Ride S.A.F.E.R. Every Time

The S.A.F.E.R. framework is a simple way for parents and guardians to remember the essentials of off-road safety.

Supervise kids
(especially under 16)
Age appropriate
(ATVs and OHVs aren’t toys, and children under 16 should not ride them)

Formal training
(take safety courses when available)

Equipment
(helmets and protective gear every ride)
Ride right
(know the terrain and keep OHVs off paved roads)
Warning or hazard symbol

Did you know?

Children under age 16 account for nearly half of all ATV-related injuries, even though they represent a much smaller portion of riders. This shows just how vulnerable young riders can be, especially when safety guidelines aren’t strictly followed. As adults, it’s important to make sure kids are properly supervised, wearing protective gear, and riding age-appropriate vehicles. A few extra precautions can go a long way in keeping their adventures fun and safe.
