Here are some practical tips to keep your family safe this winter while using fireplaces and space heaters.
Fireplaces
- If possible, keep a window open while the fire is burning
- Ensure your chimney is checked annually if using your fireplace regularly
- Always clean out ashes from previous fires before using the fireplace
- Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything flammable
- Use a safety screen or safety gate in front of your fireplace
- If you have a glass fireplace, keep your child away from the fireplace after use as it can take more than one hour to cool
- Put fireplace tools and accessories out of young children’s reach. Fire pokers or fireplace remotes should not be accessible to children
Most importantly, NEVER leave a fire in the fireplace unattended!
Space Heaters
