At Valley Children's Healthcare, we understand the importance of keeping athletes safe and healthy. Recently, NFL quarterback Derek Carr shared some tips on how to stay safe on the field! Here are his top five safety tips that every high school athlete should keep in mind when playing tackle football.

See What You Hit

Always keep your eyes on the target and never dip your head. This helps prevent severe neck and head injuries by ensuring proper tackling form and better awareness on the field.

Play as Hard as Possible

Playing with full intensity helps reduce injuries. Players who give their all are less likely to get rolled up in pileups and other dangerous situations than those who walk around the field.

Hydrate Properly

Start hydrating the day before practice and continue on game day. If you feel thirsty, it's already too late. Proper hydration is crucial to avoid soft tissue injuries and heat-related illnesses. Make it a habit to drink plenty of water consistently.

Take Care of Your Body

Develop a body care routine that includes stretching when you wake up, and before you go to sleep. A consistent routine helps you learn your body's needs and limits. Knowing what feels tight or sore allows you to address issues before they become serious injuries.

Learn the Game

Understand and learn as much as you can about your sport. "Playing" ahead of the play reduces the risk of injury because you'll be better prepared and less likely to get caught off guard. The more you know, the faster you can react, making it safer for you and your teammates.

By following these tips, young athletes can enhance their performance while minimizing the risk of injury. Remember, staying safe on the field is just as important as playing well. Let's commit to practicing these safety habits for a healthier, more successful athletic career.
