5 Safety Tips for Baseball Players and Coaches

The weather beginning to warm up is the start to many things, but for many kids it signals the start of baseball season. Whether your child is starting with t-ball or playing in the big leagues, here are some tips to remember as they hit the field this baseball season.

1. Warm Up & Stretch
Always stretch and throw before every game and practice. This helps players perform better and prevents injuries.

2. Wear Proper Gear
Remind your player they need to wear a proper fitting batting helmet when batting and while running the bases. Catchers must wear full protective gear when behind the plate, including a cup.

3. Stay Hydrated!

Drink water, even when you don't feel thirsty. When players are not on the field, they should be taking periodic sips of water. On hot days, it is important to take breaks to hydrate with water and electrolytes to keep players in tip-top shape!

4. Be Aware

Remind players it is important to always know where the ball and your teammates are. Practice good communication by calling for the ball and never take your eye off of it when you are on the field. Players should also only be swinging bats in designated areas on the field, like the on-deck circle.

5. Speak Up About Injuries
If a player is hurt, they should let their coach know immediately— they do not need to play through pain. Coaches should keep a first-aid kit in the dugout that includes items like band aides, cold compresses and gauze to help aide minor injuries.

Ensure you follow these safety tips for a fun and safe season!
