Every day at Valley Children’s Hospital begins with a mission: to provide compassionate care and unwavering support to children and their families. For our social workers, that mission starts early - often with a cup of coffee and a quick review of the patient census. From there, the day unfolds with purpose and heart.

Starting the Day: Prioritizing Care

Social workers begin by prioritizing cases based on acuity, ensuring that the most urgent needs are addressed first. They consult with the multidisciplinary team - physicians, nurses, therapists, etc. - to coordinate care and create a plan that supports both the medical and emotional well-being of patients and families within and outside of our hospital walls.

Supporting Families Through Challenges

Throughout the day, social workers meet with patients and families to provide emotional support and practical assistance. Whether it’s helping with transportation, housing or financial resources, they are there to listen, guide and advocate. Their role goes beyond logistics - they offer a safe space for families to share fears, hopes and questions during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Responding in Times of Crisis

Some social workers serve as mental health clinicians, stepping in during critical situations. When a patient experiences suicidal or homicidal ideation and cannot be safely discharged home, these professionals may initiate a 5585 or 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold to ensure safety and immediate care. Their ability to act swiftly and compassionately can make all the difference in a crisis.

Building Bridges to Community Resources

Collaboration is at the heart of social work. Our team partners with external organizations such as regional centers, schools, mental health services and hospice programs. These connections empower families with resources that extend beyond the hospital walls, helping them navigate complex systems and find the support they need.

Behind the Scenes: Documentation and Coordination

While much of their work happens face-to-face, social workers also spend time documenting in patient charts, returning phone calls, making referrals and connecting with colleagues. These tasks ensure continuity of care and allow the team to respond quickly to evolving needs.

The Heart of Social Work

At its core, social work is about helping families adjust and cope with chronic illness, inspiring courage, love and hope along the way. Social workers play a vital role in the treatment process - not only addressing immediate needs but also fostering resilience for the future.
