From Funky to Fresh: Easy Body Care Tips for Teens

Let’s be honest, your teen’s body is changing fast, and some days it may feel like it has a mind of its own. The good news? Body care does not have to be a daily battle. With a few simple habits, you can help your teen feel clean, healthy and more confident!

Skin Care 🫧

Teen skin can be tricky, but keeping it simple works best!

  • Have your teen wash their face two times a day with a gentle cleanser
    • As your teen learns their skin-type, first start with a fragrance-free hypoallergenic cleanser
  • Caution them to be gentle - no hard scrubbing or rough brushes that can irritate the skin
  • Remind them not to pick at pimples (even when it’s tempting!) because this can lead to infections or scarring
  • Choose products labeled "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free" for all products being applied to the face
  • For those that wear make up, wash it off every night. Remember to check product expiration dates and to throw them away once they are expired
  • Use a light, fragrance-free moisturizer after washing the face
  • Don’t skip sunscreen! Use SPF 30 or higher every day
    • To start, try a daytime facial moisturizing lotion with broad spectrum SPF
Body Care 🧼

A few daily habits can go a long way!

  • Encourage your teen to shower every day, especially after participating in sports or sweating
  • Remind them to wash underarms and feet well, with soap
  • Use deodorant or antiperspirant to help stay fresh
  • Clean clothes matter! Fresh underwear and socks each day are a must
  • Whenever possible choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton to help keep skin cool
  • Keep nails short and clean
  • Don’t forget their oral hygiene! Make sure your teen is brushing twice a day for a full 2 minutes each time
    • Use fluoride toothpaste
    • Replace toothbrushes every 3 months or sooner if the bristles are worn down
    • Floss between all teeth at least once a day; it’s best to do this before bed

Raising a healthy teen is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about small steps, patience and lots of support. With your help, your teen can build simple habits that help them feel good now, and for years to come!
