About Me
Dr. Shumyle Alam joined Valley Children’s Specialty Medical Group in 2025 as medical director of pediatric urology. Dr. Alam is board certified in pediatric urology by the American Board of Urology.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Alam was the chief of surgery at El Paso Children’s Hospital. He was also an assistant professor at the Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center, an associate professor at Columbia University Medical Center Division of Pediatric Urology, and later a professor of urology at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Alam earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia. He completed residency in urology at the University of Illinois, followed by a fellowship at the Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center. Here, Dr. Alam furthered his education by obtaining additional training in complex genitourinary tract reconstruction. He also developed an interest in quality improvement in order to work with institutions to produce high-performing and inclusive outcomes for all patients.
As an expert in the field of pediatric urology, Dr. Alam has served on the board of El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation and the University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso, contributed to multiple committees and improvement projects, and earned recognition as a Samberg Scholar at New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and a Pfizer Scholar in Urology.
His academic contributions include extensive teaching, peer-reviewed publications, invited lectures, visiting professorships, textbook editorship, and invited chapters. He has also presented at numerous national and international meetings, including the European Society for Pediatric Urology, American Urological Association, Society for Pediatric Urology and American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Alam has a specialized interest in complex urinary tract reconstruction, the management of chronic kidney disease and a specific interest in process improvement in and around the perioperative setting.
