About Me

Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Sayonara Mató joined Valley Children’s Specialty Medical Group in the fall of 2025 as a pediatric infectious diseases consultant for both the hospital and the clinic settings.

Dr. Mató has over 30 years of combined clinical experience in general medicine, pediatrics, pediatric infectious diseases, hospital medicine and public health. She is skilled in training healthcare professionals and implementing quality improvement programs in diverse settings in the United States and in South America (Venezuela). She is recognized for her commitment to clinical excellence, education and care for underserved populations.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Mató worked at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon for 17 years as both a pediatric infectious diseases subspecialist and a pediatric hospitalist in her role as a clinician-educator. She has received multiple teaching and clinical excellence awards from Oregon Health and Science University, Legacy Health in Oregon, University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, and professional societies. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Dr. Mató has also authored manuscripts, case reports, book chapters and abstracts in pediatric infectious diseases and public health, published in peer-reviewed medical journals such as the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the American Journal of Epidemiology, Clinical Infectious Diseases, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Journal, Pediatrics, MMWR Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, and Frontiers in Immunology.

Dr. Mató received her medical degree from Central University of Venezuela School of Medicine and completed all her postgraduate medical training in the United States, including a pediatrics internship and residency at the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Medicine, and a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at the combined Tulane University / Louisiana State University School of Medicine program in New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine during the fellowship training years. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in cardiorespiratory sciences from S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook, Long Island, New York.
