About Me
Board certified in pediatric urology by the American Board of Urology, Dr. Irene McAleer joined Valley Children’s Specialty Medical Group as a pediatric urologist in 2025.
Dr. McAleer began her medical education at Temple University School of Medicine and completed her degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. After completing a surgical internship at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, she continued her medical training with a residency in urology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by a fellowship in pediatric urology at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. McAleer also obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Abraham Lincoln University Law School and is a member of the California Bar. Additionally, she obtained her Master of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland.
During her career, Dr. McAleer gained extensive experience across diverse clinical settings, including military medical centers, specialty clinics and hospitals such as Children’s Hospital San Diego, Children's Hospital of Orange County and Valley Children’s, where she has returned to continue her work in pediatric care. She has also held multiple leadership positions including academic appointments at University of California, San Diego, San Francisco, and ultimately, obtaining appointment and retirement as clinical professor of urology that the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. McAleer has engaged in service at different levels, contributing to departmental and university committees, as well as professional organizations, including the Western Section of the American Urological Association, past president of American Association of Pediatric Urology. Dr. McAleer holds memberships in multiple professional societies and associations and is a fellow of the Society of Pediatric Urology, American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics in the Urology section. She also volunteers with community initiatives such as clean-up events and the food bank.
Passionate for pediatric urology, Dr. McAleer has earned numerous awards and honors in recognition of her dedication and contributions to the field as a pediatric urologist. She has published peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and edited volumes. She has presented her work at international, national and regional conferences, including the American Urological Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Western Section American Urological Association and the European Society for Pediatric Urology.
Her particular interests in pediatric urology are hydronephrosis, obstructed kidneys and ureters, vesicoureteral reflux, ureteroceles, inguinal hernias/hydroceles, undescended testes, hypospadias/chordee, phimosis and other penile conditions.
