A Message from the Program Director

Vini Vijayan, MD, FAAP, FIDSA

Thank you for your interest in Valley Children's Pediatric Residency Program.

The core mission of our program is to train confident and skilled pediatricians with a well-rounded foundation in primary care, medical education, advocacy, quality improvement, research and leadership. Our program works diligently to provide varied experiences for each resident to help them find their career destination in pediatrics.

As the only healthcare network in the Central Valley dedicated exclusively to caring for children, we serve a large and diverse patient population. Valley Children's Hospital is a 358-bed stand-alone children’s hospital that includes 28 regional NICU beds and delivers high-quality, comprehensive care to more than 1.3 million children in our service area. As such, our residents encounter a variety of patient diagnoses and pathology, which allows them to develop their clinical acumen, skills and scholarly interests in various subspecialties.

Clinical activities are supported with a structured curriculum and conferences. Our curriculum employs adult learning techniques to foster active learning. Resident physicians in our program will learn from highly engaged and talented faculty who are both dedicated clinicians and educators. Residents are encouraged to expand and enhance their areas of inquiry through scholarly activities during training.

Recognizing the need for advocacy and community engagement in today's healthcare environment, we have created training opportunities in a number of settings. Residents have the opportunity to conduct their continuity clinic at different locations throughout the Valley. We have partnered with multiple community organizations – including a mobile health unit, food bank and free health clinic – to provide care to children in their own neighborhoods.

Our residency program is committed to fostering a healthy work-life balance and seeks input from residents in various ways to ensure a supportive training environment. We have a well-being program that includes many benefits: wellness stipend, excused quarterly wellness days, monthly debriefing session, confidential self-assessment on stress and burnout, faculty coaches and mentors and annual retreats. These activities allow for residents to stay energized and enthusiastic throughout their training.

The goal of our residency program is to ensure that you have the tools, skills and experience to be an exemplary and successful pediatrician. Our high academic standards, innovative approaches and the individual attention allowed by the size of our program, as well as the supportive and collaborative environment, will help you thrive during your residency. We are proud of our program and achievements and are honored that you have expressed interest in our residency program. We look forward to meeting you and hope you will join us in our mission to improve the health and well-being of children.
