A Message from the Program Director

Karla Au Yeung, MD, FAAP

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program, we appreciate your interest in our program. Advocacy, interprofessionalism and wellbeing are key tenets of our residency program, which focuses on our mission to improve the health of children in our community. To this end, we have partnered with multiple community organizations -- including a mobile health unit, food bank and free health clinic -- to provide care to children in their own neighborhoods. As a resident at Valley Children’s, you will find many opportunities to participate in advocacy, community health initiatives and clinics to serve a disadvantaged and diverse population.

We emphasize interprofessional education to prepare our residents for collaborative practice as future leaders in healthcare. A team atmosphere helps build strong interpersonal relationships among physicians, learners and staff, leading to quality and safe care while creating a supportive clinical learning environment.

Creating sustainable healthy habits for work-life balance is crucial for vitality and wellness. Therefore, we have included a multifaceted wellbeing program which includes wellness benefits: a wellness stipend, periodic excused days for wellness, a debriefing session monthly, faculty coaches and mentors for advising and annual retreats.

As the only healthcare network in the Central Valley dedicated exclusively to caring for children, we serve a large and diverse patient population. This, in addition to a highly engaged faculty and innovative curriculum, creates a superb educational experience. Our residents have ample opportunity to work with attending physicians one-on-one. Our curriculum employs adult learning techniques to foster active learning. Our Interprofessional Scholarly Concentrations were created to offer focused learning for residents while giving them flexibility to design rotations that fit with their interests in primary care and advocacy, medical education, leadership and/or quality improvement.

We are dedicated to training exceptional pediatricians to be community leaders and tireless advocates for children. Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program offers first-rate training that is flexibile  and personalized. We look forward to meeting you and hope you will join us in our mission to improve the health and wellbeing of children.
