Joshua Carter, DO

Dr. Joshua CarterWhy did you choose Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency?
I chose Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program because of its strong commitment to serving the Central Valley and its supportive, close knit learning environment. Growing up in the region, I value the opportunity to train in a place where I can care for a diverse and often underserved community. The combination of high-acuity pathology, dedicated mentorship and emphasis on resident growth makes it an ideal setting to develop both clinically and professionally.

Hobbies:
I love spending time in the mountains, whether it’s hiking, backpacking, sailing, climbing or riding my bike. My other guilty pleasure is exploring the growing food scene in Fresno.

Advocacy and Research Interests and Accomplishments:
My scholarly work has primarily focused on clinical research and case-based learning. I participated in a quality improvement project evaluating the effectiveness of at home blood pressure monitoring in an adult population, with an emphasis on improving hypertension management and patient engagement.

I have contributed to case presentations examining how partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) can remain undetected despite prior imaging, particularly in patients with complex medical histories. This work highlighted the importance of maintaining a broad differential, utilizing appropriate advanced imaging modalities and recognizing the hemodynamic significance of missed diagnoses. I also explored surgical decision-making and the need for clearer guidelines regarding ostomy reversal in patients with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma. In addition to my research experiences, I have been involved in community-based advocacy efforts focused on opioid harm reduction in the Fresno area. I participated in initiatives aimed at educating medical students and healthcare professionals on overdose prevention, including the use of naloxone and the role of medications for opioid use disorders such as buprenorphine and methadone. Through this work, I contributed to improving awareness and promoting safer prescribing and intervention practices within the community.

Care Philosophy:
I believe it is a privilege to care for children and their families during some of their most vulnerable moments. My goal is to provide compassionate, family-centered care while building trust and empowering families through education. I strive to approach each patient with empathy, humility and a commitment to lifelong learning.
