Onsite Dining

Dietitians work with you and your health care team to develop a meal plan to meet your child’s medical needs and eating habits. The Clinical Nutrition Department and the Clinical Dietitians will try to honor special food preferences within the limits of your child’s diet prescription including cultural or ethnic foods, food allergies, chewing or swallowing problems and vegetarianism.

If your child has special food needs, please ask to speak to the dietitian or Patient Care Food Services at extension 559-353-6004 or extension 36004 from a hospital phone, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Meals

The hospitality aide will help patients select their meals from printed menus one to two meals prior to service. He or she will knock on the patient’s door, wait for a response and enter the room. The aide will verbally offer meal choices from the menu and record what he or she selects. If the patient is unavailable, the aide will check back later the same day. If he or she is able to talk to the patient in person, the aide will call the room. If the aide is still unable to contact the patient, a meal will be preselected for him or her. Efforts will be made to limit the number of meals that are preselected for patients.

Breakfast is served a la cart. The dietary aide will bring a cart to your child’s room where you or your child can select what he or she would like to eat. For lunch and dinner, children who eat solid food will have a tray brought to their rooms at mealtimes.

To provide a family-centered feeding option, patients may eat in the cafeteria or select food from the cafeteria at no charge between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The patient must be on a regular or high calorie-high protein diet. Once the beside nurse has granted permission, he or she will issue a “Cafeteria Pass Grape Jellyfish Café Patient Food Pass.” It is for patient use only. No snack food is permitted and food is limited to one entrée, two side dishes, milk, a fountain drink or fountain juice, and one dessert (frozen yogurt, pie, cake, Jell-O or pudding).
