Board certified in pediatric surgery, critical care medicine and surgery by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Michael Allshouse, medical director, pediatric surgery and pediatric trauma program, brings more than 25 years of expert care to Valley Children’s patients.
As one of the leading authorities in the world in the service of infants and children with Down syndrome, Dr. Allshouse is the only pediatric surgical member of the Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group. Dr. Allshouse is also the local lecturer for a program sponsored by the National Down Syndrome Society known as “Changing Lives: Down Syndrome and the Healthcare Professional.” This program provides healthcare professionals with tools and knowledge to humanely and accurately interface with families who have members with Down syndrome.
Dr. Allshouse is active in the Pull-Thru Network, a support group for families with children born with anorectal malformation and colorectal disorders such as Hirschsprung’s disease. He has conducted workshops with parent groups at several of the Pull-Thru Network national conventions.
He is also a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, where he serves on the Focus on the Family Committee; the American Academy of Pediatrics; Surgical Section; American Association for the Surgery of Trauma; SAGES; the International Pediatric Endosurgical Group; and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
In 2007, Dr. Allshouse returned to Valley Children’s from The Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado, where he served as medical director of the Colorectal and Complex Pelvic Floor Disorders Program. He was also the director of the University of Colorado Hospitals Neonatal Surgery Program and was the trauma medical director at The Children’s Hospital Denver’s Level I trauma program. Before going to Denver, Dr. Allshouse worked at Valley Children’s from 1997 to 2003.
Dr. Allshouse was professor of surgery and division head of pediatric surgery at the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. Known for his teaching skills, he has won awards for clinical teaching at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, ETSU Department of Surgery and The Children’s Hospital in Denver.
A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Allshouse completed his internship and residency in surgery at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. He completed a pediatric trauma and burn fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Allshouse trained in pediatric surgery at The Children’s Hospital in Denver. He spent 16 years on active duty serving in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy.
Dr. Allshouse lives in Fresno with his wife Denise and their five children. He is an avid reader, fly-fisherman and gardener. His faith, family and profession are the focus of his life’s work and Dr. Allshouse is committed to ensuring the best pediatric surgical program at Valley Children’s.
