Board certified in pediatric hematology/oncology and pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. David Samuel joined Valley Children’s in January 2010 and brings his expertise in pediatric neuro-oncology.

Dr. Samuel has extensive training in treating children with brain tumors, having completed fellowships in pediatric neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. As our neuro-oncologist, Dr. Samuel leads the multidisciplinary team at Children’s, encompassing neurosurgery, radiology, neurology, child psychology, social services and more. He works in conjunction with national radiation oncologists and tertiary centers to treat children with brain tumors and the long-term effects of brain tumors.

Dr. Samuel is a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and the Children’s Oncology Group. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

He has published his work in peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Haematology, Leukemia, Medical and Pediatric Oncology as well as in the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man. He also co-authored a book chapter titled “Tumors of the Brain and Spinal Cord” published in Oncology of Infancy and Childhood.

Dr. Samuel received his medical degree from the University of Dundee in Scotland and an advanced doctor of medicine research degree from Queen Mary, University of London, England, with a thesis on childhood leukemia. He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, with fellowship years at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, the Royal Marsden Hospital, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital.

Dr. Samuel is interested in traditional martial arts and has practiced aikido.
