About

Dr. Duncan Mackay joined Valley Children’s plastic and reconstructive surgery team in 2022.

With specialized training in craniofacial surgery and a multidisciplinary background in pediatric plastic surgery, healthcare management and health technology innovation, Dr. Mackay brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Valley Children’s.

After receiving his medical degree from The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Mackay earned a master’s in business administration with a major in healthcare management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete an integrated residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Mackay completed a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, part of Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, where he held a clinical instructorship in the division of plastic surgery. During fellowship training, Dr. Mackay was a faculty member for Stanford Byers Center for BioDesign, a rigorous training program for health technology innovation. The Center’s teams aim to identify innovation opportunities in medical technology with the goal of bringing innovative ideas from development to production to distribution – ultimately to improve the lives of patients around the world.

An accomplished researcher and author, Dr. Mackay has published several studies in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, the Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery and the Journal of Wound Repair and Regeneration. He has also shared his knowledge as a lecturer, presenting on a variety of topics at regional, national and international plastic surgery seminars and conferences. His research interests include outcomes for patients with craniosynostosis and cleft lip and palette who are surgically treated by using advanced 3D scanning and visual surgery planning (VSP) technology.

Dr. Mackay is deeply committed to advocacy and volunteerism, both domestic and abroad. He has made medical humanitarian trips to Antigua, Guatemala and India, where he served as a surgical assistant and translator for groups of foreign surgeons providing cleft lip and other reconstructive surgeries for children in those communities. In 2009, he co-founded and serves as Director of Friends of NOAH USA (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity), an organization designed to provide physical, educational, psychosocial and general healthcare support to the expanded family network of children in South Africa who have been orphaned by AIDS. He has also held several leadership positions with the Castleman’s Disease Collaborative Network, an advocacy group focused on raising awareness and research funding for this rare disease, and with Puentes de Salud, a non-profit clinic for uninsured Spanish-speaking families.
