A calming approach and a compassionate demeanor are part of what make parents and patients believe Dr. Clair Hilchie Schmidt has a true passion for helping and treating children. Dr. Hilchie Schmidt is a board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist specializing in surgical and medical treatment of eye pathology from newborn to adulthood.
 
She earned her master’s degree from the University of Illinois and worked as a medical speech language pathologist in an underserved area of East Central Illinois before completing medical school and her residency in the Chicago area. Dr. Hilchie Schmidt completed her fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She has also been published in several major journals, including Pediatric Emergency Care, Cornea, American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus and Ophthalmic Genetics.
 
Dr. Hilchie Schmidt comes to Fresno from Toledo, Ohio where she practiced pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus. She joined Valley Children’s in 2017 and also practices at the Eye Medical Center of Fresno. Her key areas of treatment include strabismus, amblyopia, developmental delays/autism and convergence insufficiencies (headaches, reading problems).
 
Dr. Hilchie Schmidt has a daughter, three dogs, two cats and an American Paint horse named Mickey. She enjoys reading, biking and horseback riding with her daughter.
