Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and subspecialty certified in maternal-fetal medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. David McLean joined Valley Children’s as medical director, perinatology, in August 2016. His area of special clinical interest includes prenatal diagnosis using ultrasound, patient safety and quality improvement.

With more than 30 years’ experience in his field, Dr. McLean came to Valley Children’s from Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a maternal-fetal medicine specialist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, since September 2009.

Dr. McLean is a member of several professional organizations, including Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Health Information and Management Systems Society, Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Association of Physician Leadership, and National Patient Safety Foundation. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology.

Dr. McLean received his medical degree from University of West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He did his internship in obstetrics and gynecology at University Hospital of West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Ottawa, Ottawa Civic Hospital/Ottawa General Hospital in Ontario, Canada. He completed two fellowships in maternal-fetal medicine: the first at University of Ottawa, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Ottawa Civic Hospital, and the other at University of Connecticut, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, University of Connecticut Health Center, in Farmington, Connecticut.

Dr. McLean has held various academic appointments such as clinical associate professor, obstetrics and gynecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of South Florida – Morsani School of Medicine, in Tampa, Florida; assistant professor, clinical obstetrics and gynecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, in New York, New York; and assistant professor, obstetrics and gynecology, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Hospital appointments that Dr. McLean has held include chief of quality and process improvement, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Leigh Valley Hospital, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and co-director, ultrasound, and director, clinical information systems, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Columbia University, New York Presbyterian Hospital, in New York, New York; and director, fetal cardiovascular unit, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Saint Peter’s University Hospital, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Dr. McLean has presented on numerous maternal-fetal medicine topics across the country. He has also published his work in peer-reviewed publications such as “Obstetrics Gynecology,” “Journal of Maternal Fetal Medicine” and “American Journal of Obstetrics Gynecology.”

In his free time, Dr. McLean enjoys sailing in the Caribbean, playing tennis and enjoying the many outdoor activities that the Valley offers.
