Double-boarded in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology by the American Board of Pediatrics and pediatric fellowship-trained, Dr. Roberto Gugig joined Valley Children’s in 2003 as a pediatric gastroenterologist. Dr. Gugig is associate director of the pediatric gastroenterology program and director of the endoscopy unit. His area of special interest is advanced endoscopy. He is among the few in the country trained in both ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) and EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) in pediatrics.

Dr. Gugig also provides pediatric services for Valley Children’s at Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia and Kaweah Delta’s health clinic in Exeter.

Dr. Gugig has presented his work nationally and internationally. He has published in various peer-reviewed journals and written several book chapters related to his field.

He is a member of several professional societies, including the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, American Gastroenterological Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).  He is a member of the AAP Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition executive committee, which publishes practice guidelines for general pediatricians.

Dr. Gugig received his medical degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela (Central University of Venezuela), in Caracas, Venezuela. He completed pediatric residencies at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, and University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami Children’s Hospital in Florida. He completed a pediatric research fellowship in gastroenterology and nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, and a pediatric clinical fellowship in gastroenterology and nutrition at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

Dr. Gugig is fluent in Spanish, English and conversational French.
