Joel Brownell, MD, is vice president, chief medical information officer, at Valley Children’s Hospital. In his role, Dr. Brownell’s responsibility includes oversight of the interdisciplinary Clinical Informatics department focused on leading the organization through the transition to electronic workflow. As these transitions are completed, the focus turns toward leveraging the new tools for improved quality, safety and efficiency of care.
Board certified in both Pediatrics by the American Academy of Pediatrics and in Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Preventative Medicine, Dr. Brownell joined Valley Children’s Hospital in 2000. He served as the medical director and a pediatrician at the Charlie Mitchell Children’s Center (complex primary care) for seven years.
In 2008, he became chief medical information officer in addition to taking on duties as a pediatric hospitalist. He helped lead the implementation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) in 2011, and has been instrumental in the Hospital’s ongoing electronic documentation, prescription management, patient portal efforts and more.
Dr. Brownell received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from University of California, Los Angeles. He received his medical degree from Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He completed his internship and residency at the University of California, Davis Department of Pediatrics.
In his free time, Dr. Brownell enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, traveling, snowboarding and other outdoor activities.
