Board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and with special qualifications in child neurology and epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Merveen Appu joined Valley Children’s in August 2017 as a pediatric neurologist. His area of clinical interest includes epilepsy and demyelinating disorders.

Dr. Appu is the Founding Clinical Lead for the Neurocutaneous Syndromes Clinic at Valley Children’s. The clinic focuses on coordination of multidisciplinary care for patients with neurocutaneous syndromes in the Central Valley. The clinic is primarily focused on serving patients with neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis.

Dr. Appu comes to Valley Children’s from HSHS Medical Group in Springfield, Illinois, where he worked as a pediatric neurologist since 2014. He was also an adjunct assistant professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He
 is a member of several professional societies, including the Child Neurology Society, American Academy of Neurology, and American Academy of Pediatrics, and has presented on topics in his field across the country. He has also published his work in peer-reviewed publications such as “Muscle and Nerve,” “Pediatric Neurology” and “Brain Research Bulletin.”
  

Dr. Appu received his medical degree from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India. He did his residency in pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Appu completed his fellowship in child neurology at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.

In his free time, he enjoys travelling with family and exploring diverse cuisines.
