Supporting the Journey of Continuous Learning - Nursing Education Scholarships

The Nursing Professional Development Fund was established to help nurses on the journey of ongoing academic study. The Nursing Education Scholarship award is available to assist in the academic preparation of undergraduate and graduate nursing students who are employees of Children’s Hospital Central California. The qualified recipients each receive a $1,500 award. Scholarships are awarded in June and November each year. The Annual Nurses Week basket fundraiser makes these awards possible.

The six recipients of the 2011 scholarships represent the future of the nursing profession. Their dedication to their studies and commitment to make a difference in the world by helping others will be an asset to the field of nursing.

The six recipients’ personal reasons for seeking higher education and their degrees attained or to be attained are listed below.

Hannah Bezanson, BSN, RN, MICN
RN III, Emergency Department
Hannah Bezanson began her career at Children’s Hospital in 2006 as a pediatric nurse extern (PNE) in the emergency department (ED). In 2007 she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and has continued in the ED since that time.

Bezanson decided to return to school to further her education in nursing. She will graduate from California State University, Fresno, in May 2012 with a Master of Science in Nursing degree with an emphasis as a family nurse practitioner.

Her future goal is to be a family nurse practitioner in a primary care setting. She sees herself continuing to do per-diem hours in acute care nursing as well.

Danyel Dorn, ASN, RN
RN III, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Perioperative Services
Beginning at Children’s in 2002 as a phlebotomist in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), Danyel Dorn earned her nursing degree in 2007 through the Paradigm Nursing Program.

Dorn was a member of the Unit-based Professional Development Council working with other staff members to attain the Beacon Award for the PICU 2009. She is currently enrolled at Kaplan University and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in May 2012. She plans to use her degree to advance her career into either a full-time charge nurse or a clinical educator as she has a strong passion for leading and educating.

Anthony Gonzales, ASN, RN
RN IV, Explorer, Acute Care Inpatient Unit
Anthony Gonzales began his tenure with Children’s in 1999; his experience is varied including serving as a relief charge nurse, staff nurse, chairperson of unit-based committees, and member of an emergency medical response team. He also held a summer faculty appointment at a local college.
Gonzales has always wanted to obtain his bachelor’s degree at the very minimum. Currently, he sees himself staying as a nurse at the bedside. However, he feels that by obtaining his bachelor’s degree, many more opportunities will open up to him within this organization when the right time arrives. Gonzales will obtain his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in May 2012 from California State University, Fresno.

Stacie Licon, MSN, RN, CNS, CPN
Perioperative Coordinator, Perioperative Services Department
Stacie Licon decided to return to school after some degree of self-reflection. She had completed 15 years of bedside nursing with a variety of experiences and realized she had 25 more years to work before retiring. Licon felt that while she loves being a nurse, it’s a difficult job mentally, physically, and emotionally. She wasn’t sure she could envision herself at the bedside as she aged into her 50s and 60s. Licon realized one of the wonderful things about nursing is the many choices available to be any kind of nurse, and found she identified most with the role of the clinical nurse specialist. Her many years of bedside nursing and her ability to identify with that role, together with her increased responsibilities within the organization, motivated Licon to return to school to continue on the path she seemed to be naturally moving toward.

Licon graduated in December 2011 with a Master of Science in Nursing and obtained licensure as a clinical nurse specialist. She sees herself working as a collaborative team member improving patient care, improving patient outcomes, increasing efficiency and processes while at the same time advocating for nurses working at the bedside.

Lisa Radesi, BSN, RN, MICN, CEN, CPEN, CPN
RN IV, Emergency Department
Lisa Radesi began working at Children’s in 1998 in the emergency department as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), bringing several years of healthcare experience including her work as a paramedic for a hospital-based ambulance service. In addition to her bedside nursing, she served as a clinical educator and is currently a part-time pediatrics clinical instructor for a local college.

Radesi is enrolled at California State University, Fresno, and will graduate May 2012 with a Master’s degree in Nursing as a clinical nurse specialist. She returned to school because her primary goal for the future is to be a nursing professor with a focus on pediatrics. She sees herself as teaching our future nurses what it means to be a pediatric nurse and to love nursing today and 30 years from now.

Ashley Sarabia, ASN, RN
RN II, Children’s Home Health
Ashley Sarabia started at Children’s in 2008 as an RN I in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). She later moved to an inpatient acute care unit and then transferred to Home Health in 2010.

Sarabia completed her education at California State University, Fresno, in December 2011. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and plans to participate in the graduation ceremony in May 2012. Sarabia decided to return to school to expand her opportunities and someday move into an administrative role. She feels Home Health is an incredible department and calls it a “dream job”. She enjoys the direct patient care opportunities that it provides her.

National Certifications at Children’s
At Children’s Hospital, nurses are encouraged and recognized for their pursuit and commitment to the advancement of the nursing profession to achieve higher standards and quality patient outcomes. The graph below highlights the ongoing positive trend reflecting the percentage of eligible nationally certified RNs.

Annually on March 19, Children’s Hospital celebrates Certified Nurses Day to recognize nurses for their individual certifications. In 2012, a total of 352 of our registered nurses hold certifications in the following specialty areas:

Academic Advancement
Children’s Hospital encourages employees to pursue additional academic education for purposes of achieving career development goals consistent with the needs of the organization.

The graph below highlights the ongoing positive trend reflecting the percentage of RNs with bachelor’s degree or greater. In general, approximately eight percent of Children’s Hospital nurses are enrolled in an advanced academic program.
