Children's Hospital patients and staff are used to hearing sirens outside the hospital, but once a year they're followed with Christmas carols when area firefighters and police officers make their annual visit to patients. Today firefighters from Cal-Fire, and the Fresno and Clovis Fire Departments joined officers from the Fresno Police Department and the California Highway in delivering both Christmas cheer and Santa Claus to Children's Hospital.
"We really just planned on it being us," said Fresno Firefighter Michael Gill, "But we saw Santa along the way, so we picked him up." Gill has been coordinating the holiday visit to Children's Hospital for over twenty years. Today he drove the antique fire truck that brought Santa to the hospital's front door. It was just one of the dozens of motorcycles, police cars and fire engines that rolled up the drive to the hospital with lights and sirens going.
The firefighters and officers filed in, many wearing reindeer antlers in the spirit of the holiday. They gathered in the Rotunda to treat families to special renditions of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Jingle Bells. After the songs they took time go through the hospital and visit with patients.
