Children's Launches Walking Program

Employees at Children's Hospital Central California are taking charge of their health. More than 200 people have signed up so far for the second season of the Start! Walking Program.

This groundbreaking national program from the American Heart Association challenges people to increase their activity through walking. For the kick-off, Children's employees walked one mile around the hospital campus, then gathered on the south lawn for water and snacks.

But before the walking began, Children's Vice President of Medical Affairs & Chief Medical Officer Dr. James McCarty shared information on the importance of physical activity.

According to a Harvard University study, you will gain about two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular exercise, even if you don't start until middle age.

Last year, Children's employees walked more than 60,000 miles, the equivalent of an additional 4.5 years.

Vice President of Human Resources Marta Boyer offered a few tips to help people stay motivated including:

  • find a buddy to walk with you
  • dedicate a time to walk every day
  • drink plenty of water

Walking paths have been set up inside and outside of the hospital. The second season of the Start! Walking Program runs through June 6.
