Paramount Farms Plaza Takes Shape

Expansion slated to open in the spring of 2011

Construction continues on Paramount Farms Plaza on the western end of Children’s Hospital Central California, bringing us closer to completion. The new 60,000 square-foot expansion will open in spring 2011.

West Expansion ConstructionThe expansion allows Children’s Hospital to grow its Emergency Department (ED), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Surgical Suites and Imaging Center. The first floor of the three-story expansion includes eight new emergency major-care exam rooms and two trauma rooms. Children’s ED is connected to its Imaging Center, which will receive a third MRI room, fluoroscopy imaging suite and another diagnostic X-ray suite. The second floor will expand the Hospital’s surgical and critical care capabilities, providing up to four new operating rooms and eight PICU rooms.

“More and more of our children are really sick and they require specialized services that only a children’s hospital can provide,” said Children’s President and CEO, William F. Haug. “Without this kind of increase in access, these children and their families would have to find the kind of care we offer elsewhere.”

Experiencing significant growth in virtually every service area sinceWest Expansion Construction relocating to our new campus in 1998, growing from 230 to 338 beds today, Hospital and community leaders felt there was a need to expand Children’s critical clinical programs and services. There are between 200 and 300 children in the Hospital’s inpatient units every day and 200,000 patient visits annually. Nearly 1.2 million kids (age 0 to 17) are currently in the Hospital’s service area, which stretches from Stockton to Bakersfield and the Sierras to the coast. Population growth in the area over the next five years is expected to increase by nearly twice the national average.

Paramount Farms Plaza is the most visible component of The Campaign for Children’s, the Hospital’s $42 million fundraising campaign. The largest grower and processor of almonds and pistachios in the world, Paramount Farms donated $4 million to The Campaign for Children’s. In honor of their generosity, Children’s named the new expansion project Paramount Farms Plaza.
