Kiwanis Donates $17,000 to Help Prevent Traumatic Injuries

The Hospital’s Trauma Development Special Purpose Fund receives generous donation

Kiwanis Division 5, which includes Madera and Fresno Counties, recently donated $17,000 to the Children's Hospital Trauma Development Special Purpose Fund. Their generous gift supports the primary source for all educational, developmental and injury prevention programs integral to the Hospital’s trauma services.

Kiwanis InternationalWith these monies, Children’s Hospital Central California can continue expanding our knowledge base of pediatric trauma issues, participate in regional and state level trauma committees, provide teaching on a variety of pediatric trauma topics, and participate in raising community awareness of child safety issues.

“Pediatric trauma care is a subspecialty of pediatrics in general,” said Carlos Flores, trauma coordinator at Children's Hospital. “Training for this is highly specialized, so the funds directly affect the care injured children receive when treated here at Children's.”

As a long-standing supporter of the Trauma Development Special Purpose Fund, Kiwanis opens the door for the Hospital to network and participate in local, regional, state and even national committees and projects geared toward injury prevention.

“Children's Hospital had nearly 700 trauma admissions in 2010,” said Flores. “While we are highly qualified to treat the injured child in all phases of care, our greatest success is when, through our prevention efforts, that child doesn't get injured in the first place.”

With the ongoing support of Kiwanis, Children’s Hospital can continue to offer injury prevention outreach and specialized trauma education. “We participate in scores of community events annually to promote injury prevention,” said Flores. “We teach pediatric trauma education topics in other healthcare agencies such as hospitals, social service agencies and law enforcement. We also use these funds to help inform legislators about how a particular safety bill might impact a child.”

Contributions to the Children's Hospital Trauma Development Special Purpose Fund help prevent and treat traumatic injuries. Join Kiwanis Division 5 in giving to directly affect the care hundreds of traumatically injured children receive at Children's.
