PGA TOUR golfer and valley native, 25-year old Kevin Chappell, has launched the "Champion for Children's" program at Children's Hospital Central California. The Hospital’s oncology program is Chappell’s charity of choice for his philanthropic effort as a PGA TOUR professional.
Chappell’s support is a part of the “Together, Anything’s Possible” program, a PGA TOUR initiative to build a community of tournaments, players, charities, sponsors, partners, volunteers and fans who are committed to making a social investment by helping others.
The Buchanan High School graduate led the UCLA Bruins golf team to a national championship and turned professional in 2008.
As a newborn infant, Chappell was treated in the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He went on to have a healthy childhood and discovered his talent and passion for golf.
Chappell visited the Hospital’s oncology unit in 2011 and decided it was where he wanted to focus his resources and persuade his fans to join him in this support.
“Growing up, I'd been to Children's Hospital Central California many times, though not for anything ever life-threatening,” said Chappell. “It's something I've been very passionate about and has always been close to my heart. When the Hospital approached me about becoming involved in a charitable way, I loved the idea. But, I didn't just want to lend my name. I wanted to be very active and hands-on. I want to leave my footprint on this project."
Children's Hospital Central California is celebrating its 60th anniversary of providing advanced pediatric medical care in a 45,000 square mile service area. Children’s breadth of specialized oncology services and depth of experience contribute toward achieving the best possible outcomes for kids with cancer.
“When we visited the oncology ward of the hospital to deliver Christmas presents to patients, it amazed us, the response we got,” Chappell said. “It showed how far a little gift can go. A simple, good deed can go a really, really long way. I feel if I can give a little of my time and money to families of children with life-threatening diseases, it can - at the very least - change a person's day for the better."
Founding members of Kevin Chappell's Champion for Children's will enjoy a Fresno-area golf clinic in October 2012 where Kevin will share his expertise and then will attend a special Founder's Dinner with Kevin to learn more about him and why he supports Children's.
"It's great that Children's Hospital will benefit from the generosity of an athlete who remembers and cares about the people in his hometown,” said Bill Smittcamp, Treasurer of the Hospital’s Board of Trustees. “ This program gives a new opportunity for supporters to connect with the Hospital and with a PGA TOUR golfer."
