Hospital Kicks Off $42M Campaign for Children's


Children’s Hospital celebrated a milestone in the construction of the Paramount Farms Plaza expansion and kicked off the new $42 million Campaign for Children’s

Smittcamp FamilyBill and Linda Smittcamp, co-chairs of The Campaign for Children’s, talked about their own moving experiences at Children’s Hospital following their son’s near-fatal accident. Both are active with the hospital in addition to their roles as co-chairs, Bill as a trustee and Linda as a Guild member.  They reminded attendees how important Children’s Hospital was to them as a family, and how important it is to every family in Central California.

“It was March 7, 1993 when Children’s Hospital became a necessity and a true blessing for my family, said Bill Smittcamp.  “My son Bradley and I, along with Linda and Blair, were on a beautiful Sunday afternoon bike ride that turned into a horrendous chapter in our lives.  Bradley and I were hit from behind by a drunk motorcycle rider going in excess of 65 mph.”

Linda Smittcamp talked about the advantage of having her son treated nearby, being able to stay close to her family. “Suddenly I had both a husband and a son in two different hospitals,” she said, detailing the time her son spent in the Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Rehabilitation Unit. She praised the care he received.  “And this hospital, this children’s hospital, saved my son’s life.”

Five-year-old patient Alyssa Dalleske and Children’s Hospital Foundation chair Susan Boyd stepped up to sign a huge beam, that was then lifted up to the top of the new Paramount Farms Plaza, bringing cheers from the crowd. 

This event launched Children’s Hospital’s first major fundraising campaign in thirteen years.  The Campaign for Children’s is a comprehensive $42 million initiative to help build upon Children’s rich history of success.  Children’s Hospital Central California is already one of the largest hospitals of its type in the nation, consistently ranking at the top of national benchmarks for outcomes, excellence in nursing, and patient satisfaction.

Topping Off CeremonyParamount Farms Plaza, the new 60,000 square foot expansion of Children’s Emergency Department and Trauma Program, will allow the hospital to grow emergency, imaging, surgical suites, critical care and other programs to match the deepening need of the region’s ill and injured kids.  The Campaign for Children’s is vital to provide the needed equipment, services, and unrestricted funds that can be applied where the need is greatest

The Campaign for Children’s will also provide Children’s with the support of endowments that will provide a constant source of funding for The Guilds of Children’s Hospital Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Endowment, the Willson Heart Center, and the Endowment for Excellence.  The ultimate goal of the campaign is to help Children’s Hospital meet its vision to be the premiere pediatric medical center in the heart of the Golden State.

Major investors have already stepped forward to form the base for the campaign.  They and their commitments include:  The Guilds of Children’s Hospital ($5M); Paramount Farms ($4M); the Ruiz Family and Ruiz Foods ($1M); Margaret Bennett ($1M); Jane Seddon Willson ($1M); Bill and Linda Smittcamp Family ($500K);  The Radin Foundation ($500K); the Matty Matoian Family ($400K); Bank of America ($250K); Berberian Brothers and the Berberian Family ($250K); Ken and Susan Boyd ($100K)
