Board Chair Named Mother

of the Year

The Fresno County Women’s Chamber of Commerce named Children’s Hospital Central California Foundation Board Chair Susan Boyd Mother of the Year. The Chamber paid homage to Boyd during its Mothers of the Year luncheon on May 8.Susan and Ken Boyd

“It’s very much an honor to me and an honor to my mother and the example that she was to me,” Boyd said.

The luncheon celebrated Boyd’s love of family and her commitment to the community. She and her husband, Ken, have been married 41 years. They have four children and 10 grandchildren. In addition to serving as chair of the Foundation Board, she sits on Children’s Hospital’s Board of Trustees and is a past president of the La Comida Guild. The Boyds are also active in Rotary International.

“There just isn’t enough I can say about Susan,” said La Comida Guild President Sandy Marsh. “She’s one of those people who works quietly in the background and jumps in if anything needs to be done and never says a word. She’s a wonderful asset to our guild and to our community.”

Local dignitaries showered Boyd with official proclamations highlighting the work she does in the community.

“Susan Boyd is being recognized for her success as a mother, her devotion to the family, her generosity and her compassion for her community,” said Georgeanne White, Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin’s interim chief of staff. Swearengin declared May 8, 2009 “Susan Boyd Day.”

Active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Boyd plays the organ and works with the women’s and children’s ministries. Music has always been a part of family gatherings and was incorporated into the luncheon. Her children Joey Boyd, Ashli Dardenne, Cyndi Ellsworth and Michelle Scribner sang several selections including “For Good,” “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” and “I Often Go Walking.” Her children nominated her for this honor.

“For years I’ve seen these awards for mother of the year and I’ve always thought, ‘Well, my mom is the mother of the year for me,’” Joey said.  “With all that she’s been doing with Children’s Hospital and everything that’s she’s been doing with Rotary, it seemed like the appropriate year to do it when she’s served so hard the past couple of years.”

Boyd initially learned of her selection as mother of the year on April 28 during a surprise reception at Fresno Yosemite International Airport. Chamber members and Boyd’s family gave her the news as she was about to board a plane to New Zealand.

“It was the last thing I expected,” Boyd said. “They were very successful in surprising me. It’s not often my children can keep a secret and surprise me and they did.”
