Board certified in anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology and critical care medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Theodore Greaves joined Valley Children’s in 1984.

Theodore Greaves, MDDr. Greaves has expertise in all phases of anesthetic care delivery, particularly in pediatric cardiac anesthesia. His interests include myocarditis, complex ventilation challenges, pertussis in the infant, brain protection techniques during cardiac surgery, leadership, team building and medical education.

Dr. Greaves also served as a pediatric intensivist from 1985 to 2002, and in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) leadership, including as medical director from 1992 to 1999.

Dr. Greaves has chaired and/or served on various committees at Valley Children’s and the state level, including California Children’s Services Pediatric ICU Technical Advisory Committee (CCS-PICU-TAC) and statewide trauma committees developing trauma and critical care standards for children. He was a critical care specialist consultant for site visits for CCS-PICU-TAC, and served as president of the Pediatric Intensive Care Network of Northern and Central California.

Dr. Greaves is a member of several professional associations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, California Society of Anesthesiologists, American Academy of Pediatrics, Society for Pediatric Anesthesiology, Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Fresno-Madera Medical Society and California Medical Association.

Dr. Greaves has published in peer-reviewed publications including Critical Care Medicine, The Journal of Pediatrics and The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Greaves served as co-chairman of the physician’s Building for Children fundraising committee when the Hospital was under construction at the Madera location in the 1990s. The committee raised over $1 million.

Dr. Greaves received his medical degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Southern California. Dr. Greaves completed an anesthesiology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a pediatric anesthesia and critical care fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, both associated with Harvard Medical School. He also trained in pediatric anesthesiology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Greaves enjoys spending time with his wife and family. His hobbies include bicycling, woodworking, opera, playing the French horn and tending to his mini-ranch.
