Dr. Ama Wijegunawardena joined the Charlie Mitchell Children’s Center in July 2013 as a pediatrician to provide complex primary care.
Dr. Wijegunawardena received her medical degree from Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. She recently completed her pediatric residency at Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, N.Y.
Dr. Wijegunawardena is a member of several professional organizations, including Specialty Medical Group.
In her free time, Dr. Wijegunawardena enjoys volunteering. As a volunteer physician, she provided medical care for children in communities affected by the tsunami along the southern Sri Lankan coast. She also trained American Red Cross volunteers in providing basic healthcare and hygiene practices in refugee camps there.
