Board certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Adam Birek has been practicing anesthesiology and pediatric critical care at Children’s since 1983. An active member of Children’s medical staff, Dr. Birek served as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Chair of the Critical Care Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee at the Hospital. He also served in an administrative capacity as Chief of Anesthesiology at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fresno for two years.
Dr. Birek’s research has been published in professional journals including the “Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics” and “Critical Care Medicine.” He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Birek is also an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno Medical Education Program.
Born and raised in northwestern Romania, Dr. Birek earned his medical degree and completed a two-year surgical internship at the University of Tirgu Mures, Medical School in Romania. He did five years of postgraduate medical training at the University of Toronto School of Medicine in Canada, where he completed his residency and fellowship in anesthesiology and critical care.
