(Madera, Calif.) – A study led by Dr. Daniel Ebbs, a third-year resident with Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program, was published in the March 2020 volume of Advances in Medical Education and Practice, an international, peer-reviewed journal focusing on research that advances continuing medical education and professional development.
The study, “Expanding Medical Education for Local Health Promoters Among Remote Communities of the Peruvian Amazon: An Exploratory Study of an Innovative Program Model,” examines the role that community health workers (CHWs) play in providing primary care in underdeveloped areas of the world where there are shortages of health workers. Dr. Ebbs and his team worked with communities in the Loreto province of Peru to develop and evaluate a community-oriented CHW training program to increase access to basic health information in that region.
Dr. Ebbs, the lead author of the study, is an advocate for using mobile technologies and train-the-trainer methodologies to build more access to healthcare in underserved areas. He is a member of Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program’s first class and will graduate this June, when he will begin a pediatric intensive care fellowship at Yale.
