Enhancing Quality Standards to Provide Children with the Best Care

Valley Children’s Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Physician Executive, David Christensen, Vice President of Quality, Patient Safety and Medical Affairs, Karen Dahl and Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Medical Affairs, Raed Khoury have been invited to present at the Children’s Hospitals’ Solution for Patient Safety (SPS) Conference in Detroit on May 23.

Solutions for Patient Safety is a national network that brings together more than 143 hospitals with the common goal of ensuring the best care for every child by reducing and eliminating serious harm to patients. Participating hospitals share the most effective safety practices – collectively learning from one another and teaching each other.

During their presentation, “Effectiveness of the Solutions for Patient Safety Culture Plan,” our team will share the effectiveness of additional tools that were used to supplement the culture plan recommended by SPS.

The culture plan is a set of guidelines and best practices to help hospitals care for children in the safest ways and is widely accepted throughout the industry. Our team will demonstrate how incorporating additional tools has been a helpful enhancement to our collective efforts toward reducing and eliminating serious harm for our patients.

By incorporating additional tools, Valley Children’s increased the number of staff-reported safety alerts, decreased serious safety events and improved the overall safety culture score (as measured by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality within the Department of Health and Human Services).

“We hope that sharing the effectiveness of these supplemental tools will be helpful to other hospitals throughout the United States who also share our commitment to providing safe, quality care,” said Dr. Dahl.
